Should West Virginia Arm Teachers to Enhance School Safety?
Here’s The Scoop
In a significant move to bolster school safety, West Virginia is considering legislation that would empower teachers and school staff to defend their classrooms with concealed firearms. The bill, HB 2187, has already cleared the West Virginia House Education Committee and is now headed to the House Judiciary Committee for further deliberation.
This proposed legislation seeks to amend current state laws, allowing teachers, administrators, and support personnel in both elementary and secondary schools to carry concealed firearms. These individuals would be designated as School Protection Officers (SPOs), a role that would also permit them to carry stun guns or tasers for added security measures.
To ensure that only qualified individuals take on this critical responsibility, the bill outlines specific qualifications and training requirements. Applicants must possess a concealed carry permit and participate in a comprehensive Security Protection Officer Training Program. This program covers essential areas such as firearms training, de-escalation techniques, crisis intervention, active shooter response, and trauma care.
West Virginia’s initiative aligns with a growing trend across the United States. As of January 2024, at least 28 states have already implemented similar measures, allowing teachers and staff to be armed in schools. Tennessee recently joined this list after Governor Bill Lee signed legislation following a tragic school shooting in Nashville. The shooter reportedly targeted the school due to its lack of armed security, resulting in the loss of six innocent lives.
The push for armed educators is a response to the increasing need for effective school security solutions. With the right training and tools, teachers and staff can serve as the first line of defense, potentially deterring would-be attackers and protecting our children.

My cousin is a teacher in West Virginia. She has been shooting since she was a young child, like virtually all my family. I think this is a great idea, both for her and for her students!
