Should Universities Take Disciplinary Action Against Students Who Participate in Political Protests on Campus?
Here’s The Scoop
The daughter of U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar, Isra Hirsi, was detained during protests at Columbia University, according to law enforcement sources.
Hirsi, along with over a hundred others, now faces trespassing charges. All this transpired on the same day she revealed she had been suspended from Barnard College for “standing in solidarity with Palestinians facing a genocide.”
The question arises, should universities discipline students participating in political protests on campus?
Hirsi and others formed the Gaza Solidarity Encampment, demanding divestment from companies associated with “genocide”, transparency of Columbia’s investments, and amnesty for all students facing what they call “repression.”
Their protest spiraled into fervent anti-Israel activism, calling for an intifada and the death of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Rep. Omar even questioned Columbia administrators during a congressional hearing on Capitol Hill about the campus’s anti-Israel activism. However, her alarm about a “toxic chemical substance” attack turned out to be nothing more than a harmless flatulence spray.
Amid the chaos, Rep. Jamal Bowman suggested that Hirsi’s suspension was a reprisal for her mother’s questions. But if our educational institutions are to be clear-headed and non-partisan, shouldn’t they be allowed to take disciplinary action in response to blatant disregard for rules and regulations?
How far can we stretch the banner of “free academic expression” before it tears apart the very fabric of our institutions?

I so agree with both of you, Cece and Masterglock. Traitors like these need to be banished from our country. America is not theirs, it is ours.

Better yet charge them with treason and give them the max. If they live through it send them back to the hell hole they came from. You do no disrespect America. Spoken as a disabled veteran USN Vietnam.

This is NOT “free academic expression” . It is revolutionary hate. These people have aligned themselves with terrorists factions and are in direct opposition of everything this country stands for. Past time for them to be gone from our country as well as the Marxist professors within our institutions. Revoke student visas and deport , revoke scholarships , cancel public subsidiaries, prosecute the schools officials for allowing the hate speech and activities to continue ,etc. Time to clean house and kick some serious butt

They are calling themselves Hamas, that makes them terroists and should be treated as such. Colleges who refuse to take action should have all government funding withheld. Burning the American should never had been made a part of free speech.

This may not be popular, but I am noticing a preponderance of female and minority ‘presidents’ at schools with the biggest problems. More evidence that DEI is failing these institutions and will eventually cost them.
Parents and other sponsors are starting to sue because they paid outrageous tuition for there children and all this propaganda wasn’t listed in the student Packaged information.

Non violent protests are a Constitutional right for US citizens but not for non US citizens. However, violent protests and protests denying others of their rights as these current orchestrated and foolish pro Hamas protests are doing to Jewish and probably many Christian students.

I think it is a fine line. Peaceful protests in general should not be banned. There should be free speech on campuses just like any place else in the US. But, when it comes to backing the overthrow of the government or backing terriorist organizations that is a different thing. But, then who is to decide what the terriorist organization is. Sadly, but college campuses are perfect places to brain wash young people. Young people are very susceptable to new thoughts and idea. That is where young minds are molded. Most young people are followers and want to fit in. You get a charasmatic leader and they will follow all the way to their death.

Protesting with signs and peaceful marches are fine. But vandalism and spray painting graffiti are an absolute no no and need to be prosecuted
