Should the Government Spend $2 Billion on Hotel Rooms For Migrants?
Should the Government Spend $2 Billion on Hotel Rooms For Migrants?
Here’s The Scoop
New York City is once again in the spotlight as officials scramble to accommodate the overwhelming influx of illegal migrants, a crisis that has been brewing for over a year. According to the New York Post, the city’s Department of Homeless Services is negotiating contracts with local hotels to secure approximately 14,000 rooms for migrants through 2025. This move is set to burden taxpayers with a staggering $2.3 billion bill just for housing costs over the current and past two fiscal years.
Nicole Gelinas, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, rightly pointed out the unsustainable nature of this spending, emphasizing that taxpayers cannot foot this bill indefinitely. The city’s plan to continue using hotels as shelters through the end of the year is a clear indication of the lack of a long-term solution.
The financial toll is expected to reach $5.76 billion over the next three years, with around 150 hotels already being used to shelter migrants. The cost per room is a shocking $352 per night, a price tag that should raise eyebrows among those concerned about fiscal responsibility.
New York City has been inundated with over 200,000 migrants since spring 2022, forcing Mayor Eric Adams to implement 5% budget cuts across various government programs and services. In August 2023, Adams admitted the city was at a “breaking point,” and by September, he warned that the migrant crisis could “destroy New York City,” highlighting a $12 billion deficit that threatens to impact every community and service.
The city’s sanctuary policies further complicate the situation, as they restrict cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities. Despite some moderate lawmakers pushing to amend these laws following several high-profile incidents involving illegal migrants, the City Council has so far resisted such changes.
Mayor Adams, who has been vocal about the crisis, suggested he was targeted by the Justice Department following his indictment on alleged bribery charges, claiming it was retribution for his outspoken stance on immigration.
As New York City grapples with this crisis, the question remains: how long can the city sustain this level of spending, and at what cost to its citizens? The time for decisive action and policy change is now before the city reaches a point of no return.

Absolutely not. The government has no money in respects that it’s we the people. As long as we have American citizens that for one reason or another that are homeless or whatever, we need to take care of them first.

Once Trump stops government funding to sanctuary cities, perhaps these liberals will come to their senses. Deport all of them. Sanctuary cities that refused to comply with immigration enforcement measures would not be “eligible to receive Federal grants, except as deemed necessary for law enforcement purposes” by the U.S. Attorney General or Secretary of Homeland Security and Trump is changing those positions.

The officials that want this can pay for it out of their own pocket. It is sure easy to spend other people’s money if you are a politician.

They’re spending over $29,000 apiece per year, on average, putting up these crimmigrants. How ’bout we just kick ’em all straight back out and boost my Social Security checks up to that?

We filed sibling immigration petitions, which took over TWENTY YEARS to be approved. Then before any of them could come to the US, we had to file affidavits of support, guaranteeing that if any of them got any welfare type benefit in the first five years, WE would reimburse the government.

These criminals should be deported immediately. Our nation reached its heights with legal immigrants, not illegals currently invading our country. who offer only crime while depleting our hard earned tax money. The Biden administration should be charged with treason for imposing these criminals onto us. With this administration, crime pays..

We have homeless veterans living on the streets. We have citizens struggling to keep their homes and feed their families. Medication has skyrocketed. Seniors living on social security are struggling. Our roadways are horrendous and so are our bridges. many of the illegals have brought in drugs, diseases, and people for the sex trade. The government doesn’t know how many cartels and terrorists that have entered the USA. It should always be, AMERICANS FIRST

I think all registered democrats should be required to take in support and be responsible for an illegal immigrant family or 4 illegal immigrants if they want them to stay here. Go to Russia , North Korea, China and see how welcome you will be greeted at their border.

I was born and raised in the US. I worked my entire life. I retired. My taxes keep going up and up in order to support people who are coming to this country and not working. Maybe the government could pay real estate and personal property tax for all retired people and send the “Migrants” back to where they came from.

President Trump can turn the situation into a win-win. As they track down how our tax dollars are being used … when they find what pot of money that is being used to pay for these hotel rooms, earmark those funds for removal from the entity receiving them. They obviously don’t need them if they are diverting them to be used to pay for hotel rooms for illegal immigrants. In addition, one you identify a hotel that has been receiving those funds and provide that information to the folks rounding up illegals and deport them. But before that … possibly clean up illegal immigration in the parts of the country that aren’t sanctuary getting the word out the only “safe” harbor is sanctuary cities. Illegals will migrate to sanctuary cities placing even more pressure on the mayors and city councils that want to support that policy and like a roundup, you are using the sanctuary cities as a coral for the eventual roundup … and by the time the roundup takes place, the resistance should be non-existent.

House our homeless service personnel first, homeless citizens, homeless seniors. They didn’t break the law by coming here illegally.
