Should English Be the Official Language of the US?

Should English Be the Official Language of the US?

Here’s The Scoop

In a long-overdue move, U.S. Senators Kevin Cramer (R-ND) and JD Vance (R-OH) have introduced the English Language Unity Act, a bill that would establish English as the official language of the United States.

As Senator Cramer rightly points out, “Our Founding Fathers used English to create the most precious and fundamental document of all time.” It’s high time we recognize the importance of English in our nation’s history and governance.

Senator Vance adds that “the overwhelming majority of the American people support this proposal.” Indeed, it’s a commonsense legislation that acknowledges the role of English as the cornerstone of American culture for over 250 years.

This bill would require the federal government to use English in practical situations, such as when it acts with binding legal authority or conducts naturalization ceremonies.

Critics might argue that this legislation is limiting, but they couldn’t be more wrong. The English Language Unity Act does not widely restrict the use of foreign languages, which remain essential for official reasons related to national security, international relations, trade, tourism, public safety and health, and protecting victims’ rights, among others.

In conclusion, the English Language Unity Act is a much-needed step towards codifying the place of the English language in our laws and institutions. It’s time for Congress to act and recognize the importance of English as the unifying language of our great nation.

We were taught in elementary school back in the ’70s that English WAS chosen as the official language of the new United States, beating out German in a tight vote. Why that has been removed from modern textbooks, I don’t know.

Well, if printed in a textbook, it had to be removed. It wasn’t true. Some states have adopted English, maybe your state at the time did have the debate-but has never been declared our Official National language. Just type in any search engine (EXCEPT google). Forefathers didn’t see the need back then to declare. UK/England were/are english speaking. Other countries have their official- have to learn their language, not the other way around. People want to live/stay here will need to learn English. (there will be a need for ‘English’ Teachers)

It WAS chosen as the official language – of the government of the United States of America. I had forgotten that distinction. That is why the Constitution was written in English instead of German or Latin. Why it wasn’t extended to the entire country, who knows. Oversight? Believing that common sense would tell people that, if it’s the official language of the government it stands to reason it’s also the official language of the nation that government presides over?

If I were to move to Germany, I’d learn German before I went over there! The same goes for France, Spain, any place that spoke something different than English, I would learn BEFORE I went there!!!

When I was in elementary school in the 1960’s we had a literature book “English Is Our Language”. I don’t understand why English wouldn’t already be our language. I remember being told that our early country’s language was voted on as English.

If you don’t learn our language or working on it daily within 6 months get the Hell out of here and go back to what ever hole you came from.

A CA woman was interviewed yesterday. She and her husband have been here illegally for over 2 decades. They have 4 children. They are worried about being deported. And she was speaking Mexican during the interview. Not English. I grew up in a German neighborhood. Everyone from Germany that came to the US learned English right away. My firends grandmother would go off in tangents of German when she was mad, but normally spoke English.

Being a Salvadoran American citizen, I wholeheartedly endorse English as the official language of this wonderful country. I came to the United States in 1970 as a permanent resident with my siblings and incredible parents, who emphasized the importance of the English language for success and community involvement. I am proficient in both English and Spanish, as are my siblings, and our grandchildren have embraced the same values.

It’s about time!! Will this force those who refuse? How about cutting back on printing out over 20 language forms! Save trees and $. They then would have to provide their own interpreters? Learn English. We are one of the only countries that hasn’t had English as Natl Language! Ya go to France- learn French or…Germany same thing… No more catering to those who refuse. I guess the good news is- job creation for more English Language teachers. No mor
