Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defense Richard Marles shared insights on this development during an interview with Sky News Australia. While he acknowledged that the Chinese vessels are adhering to international law, Marles described the situation as unusual, albeit not unprecedented.

Australia, exercising its sovereign rights, is actively monitoring these ships. The Australian Department of Defense confirmed the presence of a Chinese task group, including the PLA-N Jiangkai-class frigate Hengyang, the PLA-N Renhai cruiser Zunyi, and the PLA-N Fuchi-class replenishment vessel Weishanhu. These ships have traveled through Southeast Asia and are now in Australia’s maritime approaches, with the Hengyang notably passing through waters to the north.

In a show of regional solidarity, New Zealand’s military is coordinating with Australia to monitor the Chinese vessels. New Zealand Defense Minister Judith Collins expressed concern over the lack of communication from China regarding the task group’s deployment and future plans.

This comes on the heels of a concerning incident involving a Chinese fighter jet and an Australian patrol aircraft. On February 11, a Royal Australian Air Force P-8A Poseidon experienced what Australia’s Defense Department labeled an “unsafe and unprofessional” interaction with a PLA-AF J-16 fighter. The Chinese aircraft released flares dangerously close to the Australian plane, posing a risk to its crew and equipment.

These developments underscore the growing tensions in the Indo-Pacific region as China continues to flex its military muscles.
