The White House went into damage-control mode after President Joe Biden went off-script, saying Russian President Vladimir Putin shouldn’t remain in power.

“For God’s sake, this man cannot remain in power,” Biden said during a speech.

The White House later released a statement attempting to walk back the president’s remark.

“The president’s point was that Putin cannot be allowed to exercise power over his neighbors or the region. He was not discussing Putin’s power in Russia, or regime change,” a White House official said.
