“In order to convince the American people to elect us with the kind of majorities we need to pass the solutions, we need to have credibility,” Buck said.

The House has witnessed periods of instability, exemplified by the unprecedented effort to remove former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and the resulting standstill. Even McCarthy is reportedly considering an early exit, which could further destabilize the GOP’s position.

High-profile squabbles and physical altercations among GOP lawmakers have only added to the chaotic image, potentially undermining their ability to defend their slim majority.

Democrats, facing their challenges, must defend more competitive districts, with 31 open House races looming on the horizon. The GOP sees an opportunity in this scenario, noting that most of their retiring members’ districts are reliably red.

However, the Democrats’ inner-party disagreements, particularly over support for Israel and leadership challenges, could play into the GOP’s hands.

With congressional job approval stagnating over the last decade and an average disapproval rating of 72%, the public’s perception of Congress remains grim. This dissatisfaction crosses party lines and reflects a long-standing disillusionment with the legislative branch.
