Do You Think It’s Fair for Migrants to Receive $4,000 for Housing?
Do You Think It’s Fair for Migrants to Receive $4,000 for Housing?
Here’s The Scoop
New York City is once again putting the needs of migrants ahead of its own citizens, as the city hands out substantial payments and gift cards to migrants to secure permanent housing and move out of city-operated shelters. This initiative, known as the Asylee Moveout Assistance (AMA) program, has already offered 150 families a whopping $4,000 each for housing expenses, along with up to $1,000 in gift cards for necessities and moving costs.
The program, which began as a pilot in December 2023, is a collaboration between the NYC Department of Homeless Services (DHS) and various city shelters that house asylum seekers. According to a spokesperson from the Department of Social Services (DSS), the city is employing “every tool at its disposal” to aid these recently-arrived migrants in transitioning out of shelters and into permanent housing.
Eligibility for these generous payouts is restricted to asylum seekers or pregnant women in select DHS shelters who have already identified permanent housing. The $4,000 provided can be used for security deposits, moving expenses, first and last month’s rent, and household necessities. However, if these migrants return to the shelters, they won’t be eligible to receive the payment again.
This pilot program is being funded through existing agency funds, with no additional city funding being used, according to the DSS spokesperson. Despite this claim, the city has already spent a staggering $4.6 billion on projects related to the migrant crisis since the spring of 2022. As of June, over 201,200 migrants have arrived in New York City, with more than 65,000 currently under the city’s care.
It’s worth noting that this program is not a citywide effort and is only available to a select few migrant families in specific emergency shelters. The DHS did not immediately respond to requests for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.
As New York City continues to prioritize the needs of migrants, one has to wonder about the impact on its own citizens, many of whom are struggling with housing and economic challenges. The city’s approach raises significant questions about resource allocation and the long-term sustainability of such programs.

They are ILLEGAL people who think it is appropriate to ignore our rules, procedures and laws. They should never have been allowed to cross the border as an ILLEGAL to begin with. Total government misconduct to give them anything.
