Do You Support Gov. DeSantis Banning Social Media for Children Under 14?

Here’s The Scoop

Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis has signed off on a groundbreaking social media ban for minors, making it one of the strictest in the nation.

This new law prohibits social media accounts for children under 14 and mandates parental consent for 15- and 16-year-olds. Set to take effect on January 1, 2025, this legislation is a bold move to protect our youth from the dangers of social media addiction.

DeSantis has taken a strong stand against the pervasive influence of social media on our children’s lives. The initial proposal, which would have banned minors under 16 from popular social media platforms regardless of parental consent, was vetoed by DeSantis. However, a compromise was reached with Republican Speaker Paul Renner, resulting in the current legislation.

While other states have considered similar legislation, such as Arkansas, where a federal judge blocked enforcement of a law requiring parental consent for minors to create new social media accounts, Florida’s law stands out in its severity.

Supporters of the bill are optimistic that it will withstand legal challenges, as it targets addictive features such as notification alerts and auto-play videos, rather than content. This law sends a powerful message that the wellbeing of our children is a top priority, and that the government is willing to take a stand against the tech giants that profit from their addiction.

This is not a government’s job, it’s parents responsibility to regulate their kids access to social media.

Do you really think most parents are paying attention to what their kids are doing?? Parents are the problem!

    1) Kids can just go on another phone or computer. 2) It’s preventing kids from accessing model car, model railroad, race car, hotrod, race track, slotcar, race car driver, animal, and other sites that are kid friendly. 3) It’s preventing kids from making money online, and buying stuff on eBay.
As a lifelong 59 year old hotrodder, model car builder, model railroader, dirt track fanatic, has it occurred to anyone, that kids can buy/sell Hotwheels cars, model car kits, slotcars, model railroad stuff, and crafts online? Why would anyone want to prevent that? Yeah, prevent kids from being entrepreneurs, then cry when they’re 20+, and unmotivated.
I understand the logic and to a degree, the need to limit kids, but outright bans do nothing but hurt us all.

At 59 you survived without going online to see model railroads, etc. I bet you went to hobby shops like I did.

How many kids under 14 are buying and selling on eBay? Some, maybe. Most, no.

What our children can and cannot do is the responsibly of the parent or guardian not Government

I’d support banning (anti-)social media altogether!
