John Cleese—beloved comedian and Monty Python veteran—has firmly criticized cancel culture’s creeping totalitarianism.

Cleese’s comments were made during a conversation with the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression group’s Greg Lukianoff. The host questioned Cleese about the evolution of cancel culture, from the uproar stirred by his 1979 film “The Life of Brian” to today’s hypersensitive climate.

Cleese acknowledged that people have always been offended by certain topics, and in his career, he’s occasionally overstepped the mark. However, he distinguished today’s cancel culture from past forms of protest. He noted that cancel culture is organized, with a goal beyond simple protest – it aims to get people fired. In Cleese’s words, setting out to get someone fired is “very totalitarian.”

Moreover, Cleese sees cancel culture as an enemy of creativity. He explains that the fear of offense acts as an internal interruption that hinders the creative flow. Cleese has also addressed the insidious effect of this culture of fear. He points out that it discourages people from challenging their preconceived beliefs, thereby stunting personal growth.

What’s particularly alarming is the impact cancel culture has on people’s job security. This fear of being fired is paralyzing, causing many to suppress their true thoughts and opinions. Cleese criticizes the current trend of virtue signaling, warning that those who believe they are purer than they are, tend to become authoritarians.

Cleese has long been a vocal critic of cancel culture, previously labeling the “wokes” as the new “authoritarians.” His recent comments are a stark reminder of the dangers of this virulent culture.
