Are Republican Women Leading a Gun Ownership Surge Over Democratic Men?

Here’s The Scoop

In a striking revelation that underscores the shifting dynamics of firearm ownership in America, more Republican women now own guns than Democratic men, according to a recent Gallup poll. From 2019 to 2024, an impressive 33% of Republican women reported owning a firearm, surpassing the 29% ownership rate among Democratic men. This marks a significant 14-point increase in gun ownership among Republican women compared to the 2013 to 2018 period.

The data highlights an evolving landscape where Republican women are increasingly embracing their Second Amendment rights. Despite a persistent gender gap in firearm ownership—with 43% of men and only 20% of women owning guns—the gap has narrowed in recent years. This trend is a testament to the growing recognition among women, particularly those with conservative values, of the importance of self-defense and personal protection.

The divide between political parties on gun ownership is also widening. The gap has expanded from 16 points in 2007 to a substantial 28 points by 2024. This divergence reflects a broader cultural and ideological divide, with personal protection remaining the primary reason Americans choose to own firearms. A 2023 Pew Research study found that a staggering 81% of gun owners feel safer with a firearm in their possession.

Interestingly, while Democrats continue to push for stricter gun control, support for handgun bans is waning, even among their ranks. Pew Research indicates that 60% of Democrats who don’t own guns can’t envision ever owning one, and 86% believe it’s too easy to obtain a gun legally in the U.S. Yet, the softening stance on handgun bans suggests a growing recognition of the practical realities of self-defense.

Gun policy was a pivotal issue in the 2024 election, with 53% of President-elect Donald Trump supporters and 59% of Vice President Kamala Harris supporters considering it “very important” to their vote. As the nation continues to grapple with issues of safety and individual rights, the conversation around gun ownership remains as vital as ever.

Other than the data from this poll, I believe that gun ownership among women have more to do with democrats failing to protect it’s citizens. And for the most part women are more vulnerable to violence than men so it would make sense.
