Here’s the Scoop
If residents want to mitigate their chances of being a victim of crime, they should avoid wearing jewelry in public, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said.
“Over the last year there has been a marked increase of armed robberies involving victims wearing expensive jewelry while in public,” the LAPD said in a statement. “If it is visible, it can be a target.”
Similarly, the Beverly Hills Police Department warned the public not to wear jewelry in public following a recent smash-and-grab burglary, wherein thieves made off with more than $5 million in merchandise.
The LAPD’s warning comes as Los Angeles is experiencing a sharp uptick in crime. Robberies in the city are up 18% from last year, and armed robberies are up a staggering 44%.
